Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to sell part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – a record for a Formula 1 squad – following the McLaren team were valued at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure in September.

Wolff, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team principal and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Breakdown

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos, who each also own one-third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The governance of the team will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Valuation Growth

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos Group bought its stake for £208 million in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the expansion in market values of F1 teams recently due to the increasing appeal of Formula 1 around the world.

This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630m (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the most successful sports film to date.

Present Performance

The Mercedes team are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren, with three Grands Prix remaining this season.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has won two of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a unprecedented eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
